Songs with a message...do they still exist?

Hozier's "Take me to Church" is an interesting song to compare to other current 'hit' songs. Its concept and message are vastly different to the norm. In a time where over 90% of songs are talking about either sex or drugs, a ballad about the treatment of homosexuals offset in a style of a church ballad is not only a juxtaposition but very left field. It is this difference that makes it refreshing for the audience to see a different style of song portrayed and thus its overwhelming popularity. Whether you like the song or not, you have to appreciate an artist who takes a different approach to their music.

Hozier, a relatively new artist in regards to mainstream media has achieved a lot with this song, he has shown that there is still some respect and popularity for real artists who move away from the generic style of mass media. This will provide up and coming artists with the motivation to be bold and different to make their way into the market and secure the same success as Hozier. You get the feeling from the song that we can see an artist  who is passionately conveying a message to society on the treatment of certain minority groups.
